National Judges 2005

The 39th National Show and Sale for the Murray Greys Beef Cattle Society has showcased their achievements and reinforced the success of this great Australian breed in their Centenary Year. The national show and sale was held at Wodonga on Wednesday April 20th and Thursday April 21st.

The show took place on the Wednesday and brought forth some great results. Judging was under the watchful eye of noted cattle breeder Chris Knox from Coonabarabran. Mr Knox was assisted by junior Murray grey breeder Sheryn Claridge from Tasmania.

The show results lead to Murflield's Yippeeio Y1 A1 taking out Champion Senior Bull, while Champion Senior Female was taken out by Glenliam farm Antionette T32 A1 ET. Unlitmate Earl Grey A1 won Champion Junior Bull, while Junior Female was Lindsay Melody Y67.

Thursday was another successful day for the Murray Grey Breed when their National sale took place. Bulls, Junior Bulls, Senior females and Junior females went under the hammer. The day produced some great results. 19 Senior Bulls were sold with an average of $3,934 a top sale of $9,500 and a Gross sale of $74,750, 17 Junior Bulls sold with an average of $3,382 a top sale of $6,250 and a gross of $57,500. It was a very successful day for the 9 Unled Bulls with an average of $3,786 a top of $9,000 and a gross sale of $26,500.

The prices set by the Bulls were a great start to the day but were later topped by the females with some outstanding results. 16 Junior Females were sold which had an average sale of $3,035 a top of $8,000 and a gross of $48,400.

The standout of the day went to the 10 Senior Females that went under the hammer. The average sale of the females was $6,725 a top of $12,000 and a sale gross of $48, 400.

Success with the Unled Females was also very pleasing with an average sale of $4,529 a top of $8,000 and a gross of $31,700.

Overall the sale was a great success for many sellers and buyers with 83 Murray Greys selling for a total gross of $313,675 dollars.

Sale organisers said that this year’s national offering was outstanding and provided commercial beef producers the opportunity of securing bulls that would enhance beef producing programs. The top line of led and unled females provided commercial and stud breeders the opportunity of selecting from the breed’s best bloodlines.

A great time was had by all that attended the National Banquet of Beef, held on Thursday evening, where 200 Murray Grey enthusiasts enjoyed dinner, and entertainment from renowned axeman and speaker David Foster of Tasmania.

Overall the 39th National Show and Sale of the Murray Grey Society has been a great sign that the breed just keeps improving into the future. Congratulations to all the buyers and sellers who had success at the national and organisers hope to see everyone there again next year.
