QLD MGY Camp set for success

The 3 day camp is aimed at giving young people, aged between 8 and 21, an opportunity to learn about breeding and showing of stud and prime cattle. Activities such as a junior judging, handling and stock show will keep the youth busy all weekend. For the parents and any interested breeders an auction of relevant products such as halters, lick blocks etc kindly donated by generous businesses will be run on the Saturday Night after the youths dinner. All money raised will go to the QLD MGY for future camps.

The camp is to be held at the Pittsworth Showgrounds from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th of July 2004. This is easily one of the cheapest camps throughout the breedsat only $60 with all meals provided and no camping fees
All cattle at the Muster will be Murray Greys, registered with the Murray Grey Society. If you don't have one, don't stress, we will arrange for you to borrowone for the 3 days. A stock show is being run in conjunction with the Muster to give participants a chance to put some of their newly learned skils to use. For entry forms or further information contact Laura on 07 38485976.

If you have something to donate or know of a business that has something to donate for the auction please contact Steve on 07 46988244. Entries close 16May2004.

New Committee Members - Darling Downs

At the Darling Downs Murray Grey Breed Promotion Group AGM, nominations were called for all positions. Graham Allen was again voted in as President. Brian O'Halloran after many years in service to the group handed over the role of Secretary to Jan Beutel. Steve Dummett was voted in as Publicity Officer to replace the long standing Myles Davis. Sylvia Park was elected unopposed as Treasurer. Graham Allen is looking forward to fresh ideas from the new members. If the AGM is any indication of the role this group will play in 2004 and early in 2005 (100 years of breeding Murray Greys), things are looking very positive for the breed on the Darling Downs.

Cross Breeding with Senepol

What is Senepol?
Senepol were developed in the West Indies a hundred years ago, when Red Poll were introduced to the local cattle which were Ndama cattle from Senegal in West Africa. Ndama were good beef cattle who were the only cattle in Africa resistant to Tse Tse Fly and were very heat and worm tolerant. They were Bos Taurus longhorn cattle. Red Poll introduced better milking, polledness, improved meat quality and changed the colour to red. The cattle were bred for meat and as there were no sales and negligible showing, only those animals sound for breeding were retained and the others slaughtered, thus extremes were avoided. The cattle today are moderate in size. They are exceedingly quiet (even quieter than Murray Greys). They have "slick" coats giving heat and tick tolerance. They have a lowere body temperature than any other cattle and this aids heat tolerance. They will graze on the hottest day. The slick coat and the lower body temperature are dominant and present in the first cross cattle as in pure bred. Tick tolerance of the first cross is as good as pur Brahman. They are very hardy and able to survive on hard feed. US studies indicate they gain weight under hard conditions better than a Brahman.

They have small calves, mostly 32-34kg. They are slightly leaner than Angus with similar EMA and yield. Marbling is probably less than Angus or Murray Grey but superior to Hereford. They have a higher incidence of tenderness gene than Hereford, not as high as Angus/Murray Grey.
Why cross with Murray Grey?
They take any hair off, add heat tolerance and general hardiness. They do not harm temperament or carcase quality. They maintain polledness but do not appear to be as dominant as Angus or Murray Grey. They maintain maternal characteristics.

Unlike a Brahman which is phenotypically a very different animal the Senepol is a “British” looking animal and the first cross is classically British with a slick coat. When an F1 is crossed to F1 the progeny are uniform. They do not spray around in type like a Brahman Cross. On a recent trip to view Senepol cattle the F1 X F1 progeny were as even as peas in a pod. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t produce uniform lines of composite cattle. The only drawback here is the non compatibility of red and grey. My calves are all light grey by one bull but theirs have produced dark grey. The slick coat can be maintained at 1/4 Senepol with selection and this has been seen in both Murray Grey and Angus. On our trip we saw Shorthorn crosses who looked like slickcoated Shorthorns, Angus cross like slick Angus, Senex – a slick coated version of “shaver beef blend composite” cattle and Charolais crosses. The Senepol noticeably improved the Charolais, adding softness, better shoulders and less overall coarseness.
In the USA, RA Brown Ranch has produced a composite called “Hotlander” putting Senepol x Angus bulls over Simbrah females producing even lines of hardy high yielding cattle with good carcase and plenty of hybrid vigour. There are any number of Euro/Brahman females in Queensland suitable for a “Senegrey” bull to do the same thing. The big plus is the females are hardy enough to retain as breeders in any country. Bos Indicus influence can thus be reduced opening up new markets but still hardy enough for live trade markets.. Contributed by Garry Porter 07-46300235

Stud in the Spotlight - Chvalli

The stud was established in 1986 with the purchase of Double D. Democrat (a son of Orcadia Pk. Diplomat), and several cows from Gordon Fisher at Pittsworth. Over the years females were sourced from “ Willalooka”, the best of these being the “Anne” family. Other females of note were “The Wilderness India” and Allaway Rose Anne. The progeny of these females has laid the foundation for the heard today.
Over the years AI has been used along with the home bred sires, namely – Chvalli Uralla, Warrigal, Perkins & Resurrection. The aim has always been to breed a larger framed beast whilst still maintaining plenty of muscle and “doing ability”. Calving ease has always been important and we do not use any large birth weight bulls because we know our customers don’t have time to “baby-sit” cows at calving time.
Some of our recent show successes include:
Tmba 2000 – MG Feature Show – over 90 entries
Chvalli Uralla – Calf Ch & Grand Champion and interbreed Pair Champ (13 months old)
Brisbane Royal 2001 – Snr and Grand Ch. Bull.
- Chvalli Taroo
Tmba 2003 – Calf Ch. – Jnr Ch. – Snr Ch. And Grand Champion Bulls
Tmba 2004 – Bulls Calf Ch. Chvalli Yayoo.
Grand/Snr Ch. – Chvalli Warlock
Females Calf/Grand Ch. Chvalli Anne

Calling for Stories/Articles

As you can see this newsletter was put together to get word out to Murray Grey Breeders in Queensland. Without collaboration the breed will fall into insignificance.
If you have a story or a good yarn, we would love to hear about it.
Doesn’t matter if you’re a stud or commercial breeder. Doesn’t matter if your from Woop Woop or Upper Cumbunga West. In the end we all have the same aims or goals.

So; if you have a passion for Murray Greys and have something interesting to say please email (preferred) or fax your story to Steve Dummett, Publicity Officer, Fax: 46988244 or email: steve@darrowbymurraygreys.com.

Show Results

A valid comment from the National President: Gary Buller who wishes to “...sincerely thank those members who helped keep the performance of the Breed in the spotlight through exhibiting in steer and carcase classes, show classes and sales.”

To get these results, I contacted all of the show societies and got them to fax any MG content. So if we missed your show result please let us know and we will publish it next time.
