THE Southend sale had a mammoth task to live up to after last
year's exceptional result but vendors Max and Margaret Wise
were satisfied with their strong $3917 bull average.
The sale at Katanning on Monday stood out for its evenness among
the 37 bulls on offer and although a $7500 top was reached prices
were consistently in the $3000-$5000 range, reflecting the solid
line-up.

Southend stud principal Max Wise (left) and buyer Geoff Harris,
Grass Patch, with the $5500 second top price bull Lot 9 at the
Southend sale
A list of familiar names read like an annual roll call of buyers
but it was industry newcomer Barry Eldridge that outbid all
to buy Southend Bravo, one of five halter-led bulls that fronted
the sale.
The Perth-based former mining engineer is redeveloping an old
dairy farm at Benger and establishing a breeding herd with 110
ex-Linkletter Chargrey cows.
He originally planned to fatten steers on the farm but wanted
the extra challenge of a breeding herd.
He recently bought a Monterey bull and had earmarked another
sale to get a third. He attended Southend with farm manager
Fred Seaman and adviser Vince Sgambelluri who said they were
more interested in good conformation, muscling and other physical
attributes than Breedplan EBVs.
Mr Sgambelluri said Bravo had the makings of a really good bull.
He was by Southend's well-performed sire West Rowan and EBVs
of +2.9 for birthweight; +1 for milk, + 19, +25 and +35 for
200-, 400- and 600-day weights only added to their conviction.
The $5500 second top price was paid by Geoff Harris, Grass Patch,
for Southend Burst, by Mungatta Dallas, and carrying a similar
set of figures but again it was type that swayed the buyer's
decision.
Geoff was back for the second time after buying his first Southend
bull three years ago and had nothing but praise for the Wise's
cattle.
Despite the industry's low prices he was expanding his small
40-cow herd to 70 head this year.
"I haven't been in cattle that long but they have a very
quiet temperament and they are easy to work with in the yards,"
Geoff said.
He bought a second bull, by West Rowan, for $5000 and was one
of five buyers from the far south east that plundered the sale
for 13 bulls.
Among them was Strawberry Downs, Salmon Gums, which took home
bulls for $4250, $3500 (twice) and $3000.
Troy Della Vedova also was a multiple buyer taking two for $5000
and $3000 to make a tally of six Southend bulls bought over
several years for a 1000-head herd the family ran east of Esperance.
Koodiewoodie Grazing, Dandaragain, paid $4750; Cadogan Estate,
Williams, paid $5000; Jesmond Farmers, Karlgarin, paid $4000
for the best of two; Don and Bev Strang, Donnybrook, paid $4000
for the best of two; local buyer Miripin Farms, Woodanilling,
also paid $5000 for the best of two and BA & LD James, Kalgan,
bought one bull for $5000.
This year's average tumbled from $5288 last year but the weakness
in the market was felt more in the female offering.
Only one of the 10 unmated heifers sold for $2000 to Norm Hill,
Mt Barker, who is establishing a new herd.
The three-for-one benefit of the mated cows with calves at foot
sparked more activity from the crowd with only one cow failing
to sell under the hammer.
The eight that sold made either $3000 or $2500 with PL &
PR Sudholz, Jurien Bay, the first to pay the top money for a
rising six-year-old cow with a heifer calf at foot.
CA Farmer & Co, Boddington, who bought the first bull in
the ring for $4250, also paid $3000 for a rising seven-year-old
cow with calf that had been retained in the stud.
Breeders Leith and Allyson Rhodes, Lana Downs, Serpentine, paid
$3000 for a rising five-year-old cow on the point of calving
again which already had her calf weaned.
The Allysons run 160 mainly commercial breeders but the cow
represented an outcross for their small stud which they were
slowly and selectively building.
It was the 12th annual on-property sale and Elders auctioneer
Dennis Roberts said it was probably the most even team ever
offered by Southend.
Buyers were a little conservative in response to the beef market,
he said.
"Others took the opportunity to buy bulls at very competitive
prices but the highlight was the cows and calves - they sold
exceptionally well and were a good line-up," Mr Roberts
said.
After two years of extremely good averages Mr Wise was pleased
to see his clients get the better end of the deal.
"Considering the beef climate you can't expect people to
extend more than they have to. I like people to go home paying
less than they were willing to pay - it automatically makes
it a better bull," Mr Wise said.
"I seriously believe that with the cattle industry the
bigger the gloom, the bigger the boom and I can see good things
ahead.
"In the eastern states they have already had big (price)
rises - we are just a bit behind."
Queenslands Wandoan Five Star
Sale held 31-08-2007
Buyers came from Barcaldine, Durong,
The Gums, Chinchilla, Blackwater, Mungar and surrounding local
areas, to be presented with one of the best line-ups of Murray
Grey bulls ever seen at Wandoan. Top

Vendors remarked that all the bulls
scanned exceptionally well. Several bulls scanned high 120s

Interestingly the last three bulls
in the ring attracted bids.

Glengower 4 Bulls averaged

The Ultimate 4Bulls averaged

bull Landmark Gingin agent Greg Neaves with the $9000
top
price bull offered by the Bundaleer stud at the Elders
GinGin Murray Grey bull sale last week.
(To view larger image please click on photo) |
The
second top price bull at last week’s Elders Gingin Murray
Grey bull sale was this mountain of muscle offered
by Bundaleer Murray Grey stud, Karridale, who sold the
bull for $7250 to RS & TJ Menzies, New Norcia.
|
A RESERVED crowd of buyers received
the offering at this years’ Gingin Murray Grey bull sale last
week.
Despite an excellent sale top price of $9000 which was achieved
by the Bundaleer Murray Grey stud, Karridale, the clearance
of the 40 offered bulls failed to be appreciated with only 18
being sold.
Paying the top price of $9000 was Landmark Gingin agent Greg
Neaves, who purchased the bull on behalf of an undisclosed local
grazier.
“We had inspected the bull prior to the sale and we liked his
growth,” Mr Neaves said. “His figures also impressed.”
Mr Neaves’ client has been a repeat purchaser of the Bundaleer
bulls over the last few years.
The bull, Bundaleer Zone Z27 (AI), was clearly in the ‘zone’
as he showed 952kg of meat and muscle off to its best advantage
catching the eye of several spirited bidders. Offered as a three-quarter
share and possession, Zone was marked in the catalogue from
the beginning as being a bull with something special being in
the top 5pc for EMA (125cm2) and top 1pc for milk (+10). Sired
by Willalooka Main Break V856, he also displayed terrific growth
figures with +36 for 200 day weight, +57 for 400 day weight
(the top 400 day weight reading in the state) and +83 for 600
day weight.
Second top price of the sale was also achieved by the Bundaleer
Murray Grey stud, with Bundaleer Young Star Y46 (AI), entering
the ring immediately after the top price bull selling for $7250.
The successful purchasers of Young Star were Tania and Rob Menzies,
New Norcia, who saw a photo of the bull and instantly liked
him.
“After actually seeing him in the flesh we were impressed by
his figures and even more impressed by his overall conformation
and structure,” Tania said.
The bull is now destined to go over the Menzies’ commercial
Greyman herd, comprising 120 breeders, where his purpose will
be to dilute the Brahman content.
Acheiving their top price on the day, Avondell Murray Grey stud,
Beverley, sold Avondale Scorpio (AI) (ET) for $4000 to Colestream
Farms, Merredin, who were represented on the day by Elders Breeding
Services manager Kim McDougall. Continuing through the catalogue,
Mungatta Murray Grey stud, Wongan Hills, had a relatively strong
sale selling five out of their six offered bulls.
They achieved a top price of $3500 which was paid twice for
Mungatta Esperanto and Mungatta Euro Dollar with Timbarra Trading,
Wandering, purchasing the first and Elders Northampton agent
Craig Walker (buying on behalf of IE & EM Teakle & Son,
Northampton) purchasing the second.
Mr Walker also purchased a bull from the Lana Downs stud for
$2750 on behalf of WE & KL Pluschke, Northampton, and then
continued to bid on the Mungatta bulls securing another once
again on behalf of the Teakle’s paying $2500 while Elders Midland
agent Jeff Lynn, also saw the merits of the Mungatta offering
buying Mungatta Etrovert (AI) for $2500 on behalf of SEB, Badgingarra.
The last of the Mungatta offering, Mungatta Echo sold for $3000
to Lynford Farms, Williams.
The Bundaleer Murray Grey stud and Avondell Murray Grey stud
also both had comparatively strong sales besides their top price
efforts, with other notable sales including Bundaleer selling
Bundaleer Zodiac for $4250 to CR & CR Baker, Bullsbrook,
as well as Bundaleer Zest for the same price to C Garreeffa,
Julimar Farm, and Bundaleer Zoolander Z11 (AI) who caught the
eye of buyer John Ward, Jurien Bay, when he secured him for
$3000.
The Avondell stud sold Avondell Spartan Z10 (AI) for $4000 to
Elders Northampton agent Craig Walker who continued to show
his support of the sale buying this time on behalf of WC &
PI Mailard, Perth.
Elders Serpentine agent Phillip Petricevich was active on behalf
of several clients throughout the day securing Belranda Zeeman
who was offered by Belranda Murray Grey stud, Baldivis, for
$3000 on behalf of Purcell Nominees, North Dandalup, and Lana
Downs Zeus from the Lana Downs Murray Grey stud, Serpentine,
also for $3000 on behalf of Robert Armstrong.
Mr Petricevich also purchased Avondell Silverstar from the Avondell
stud for $3500 also on behalf of Purcell Nominees.
Jormal Glen Murray Grey stud, Cloverdale, sold one Murray Grey
bull on the day with Jormal Glen Street Spirit (AI) selling
to Elders Williams agent Steven Ford on behalf of M Karafil
& B & I Angoni, Boddington, for $2500.
Tarlina Murray
Greys sell to $4,000 (March
16th)

Tarlina Murray Grey stud sold two bulls at a top price of $4,000
at its recent 15th Annual on-property sale, achieving
a 100% clearance for the bulls offered with an average of $3009.

Seventeen registered cows by Glenliam Farm Xpression were also
offered, bringing a top of $3,000 to average $1,570, while ten
commercial cows sold to $1,750 for an average of just under
$1,517.
EP Murray Greys average $4150 in 'hot'
sale

Thursday, 8 March 2007
SCORCHING 43-degree heat did not deter buyers at the 16th annual
Tarlina Murray Greys on-property sale at Port Lincoln on Friday,
with Rodney and Ruth Gregurke clearing 10 bulls to $4750.
This followed the Gregurkes selling Tarlina Acacia RBG A21,
a silver son of Robern Taurus RET T14, the night before the
sale at $15,000 to New South Wales buyers Rob Walker, Breelong
farms, Woodenbong; and Graham Hudson, Rogilla Park, Dorrigo.
Taurus sons were popular buys, with repeat client David Havis,
Wanilla, paying $4750 for Tarlina Achillies, for his commercial
Murray Grey herd.
The 820-kilogram bull had a frame score of 6.5, eye muscle
area of 87 square centimetres, and a P8 measure of 5 millimetres.
The 10 2005-drop bulls including Tarling Acacia, averaged $4150,
nine of them going to commercial producers.
Because of the prolonged drought and shortage of paddock feed,
only nine Tarlina cows were sold, to $1200 averaging $1150.
Other bull buyers included D Murphy, Elliston, one at $3500
to put over his Poll Hereford cows; M Nelligan and G Traeger,
Cummins, one at $3000; Wardle & Co, Kimba account Symonds,
a grey Taurus son at $3250 ; and Jim Casanova, Pt Lincoln, one
at $3500.
Volume buyers were David Hunt, Cowell, paying $2500 for a silver
bull weighing 810kg for his commercial Murray Grey females,
and three cow-and-calf units at an average of $1200;Geoff Perry,
Fairview Ridge, Harndorf, two cows at $1200; Trevor Gameau,
Wanilla, two heifers with calves during the sale and bought
two cows after the auction.

Topping
this year's Gingin multi-breed bull sale
at Gingin was Mungatta Explorer at $8200.
With the bull were Mungatta connection John Stickland
(left); Elders Breeding Services auctioneer Kim McDougall;
Wayne Carter of Bird Cameron Moora, who donated the top-price
buyer prize; Explorer buyer Shane Edwards, Stockhill Grazing
Co, Quairading; and Mungatta connection Leon Stickland.

THE Gingin multi-breeds coming
of age sale saw another strong offering supported by spirited
bidding, which peaked at $8200 in its 18th year.
Prices generally rose on the 2005 results over an equal number
of bulls catalogued from six breeds and 10 studs.
Overall, the sale average was up by $334, the gross lifted by
an impressive $29,100 while the top price was unchanged from
last year.
The conjunctional sale was led by Elders Breeding Services auctioneer
Kim McDougall while controlling the team in green was Landmark
senior stud stock auctioneer John Wirth.
Both agents were equally pleased with the results, which saw
89pc of the offering clear under the joint hammer.
Mr McDougall said the sale was solid and punctuated with highlights
in some breeds. "There were a number of bouts of spirited competition,
certainly within the Angus, Murray Grey and Gelbvieh breeds,"
he said.
"Also worthy of mention was the quality presentation, which
was outstanding, with depth of selection throughout the breeds
that were represented in volume.
"Once again the Elders network was in attendance, bidding with
customers and on behalf of customers throughout the catalogue
from the beginning to the end." Mr Wirth agreed, saying that
overall the presentation was excellent.
"It was also one of the biggest crowds seen at this sale," he
said.
"As the selling season has progressed bidders have picked through
the catalogue to select what they consider to be the better
bulls they are prepared to pay for.
"Once again that was evident today and reflected the season,
with the top bulls making very good money."
Topping this year's catalogue was a superb Murray Grey bull
with a great set of figures from the offering of Wongan Hills-based
Mungatta Murray Grey stud. The 904kg silver coated April 2004-drop
sire, Mungatta Explorer (PB), was by homebred sire Mungatta
Apollos and out of Mungatta Quirindi.
Explorer had good growth EBVs at +19, +32 and +50 for 200, 400
and 600 day growth, while achieving +2 for milk, +0.1 for scrotal
size, +26 CWT, +1.9 EMA, -0.3 rib, -0.3 rump, +0.9 RBY and +0.1IMF.
After scouring the state during this year's selling season for
the perfect bull Shane Edwards, Stockhill Grazing Co, Quairading,
finally found his requirements in Explorer.
Mr Edwards, who is known by most for his Merino stud, Stockhill,
said his purchase was another step towards diversification after
buying 33 cows from the nucleus Chargrey bull breeding herd
from the Linkletters dispersal earlier this year.
Explorer's depth of breeding was one attraction of the sire
- a further five bulls in the Mungatta catalogue were also sired
by Mungatta Apollos.
"He is also very robust and is a good doing type," Mr Edwards
said. “He's balanced, has a beautiful temperament and is hard
to fault. He also comes from a Wheatbelt stud and will suit
our similar environment."
In other Murray Grey results Wannamal-based David Hill had a
complete clearance of the three Uruga Murray Greys presented
in the catalogue.
The first bull offered, Uruga Concorde (AI), peaked the bidding
at $4500 with his top measurements, growth and size at 878kg.
Bindoon producer RV Epton purchased a growthy, thick bull with
spring of rib at $3500, while PL & SM Rendall, Corrigin,
obtained a muscly bull with good expression for $2500.
Top price vendor Mungatta achieved a complete clearance of its
offering to realise an average of $3700.
BG & CA Edmonds & Sons, Calingiri, collected for $4400
a silver bull that displayed thickness and spring of rib and
was sired by Mungatta Apollos - the sire of the top-price bull.
Also buying a silver bull was FR & BJ Schubert, Bateman,
who spent $4200 for an 814kg bull that was also a son of Mungatta
Apollos.
Lindsay-Boonaroo
restore averages (March
2nd)

A good clearance was recorded at the recent Boonaroo-Lindsay
Murray Grey and Angus Sale at Casterton, Victoria, with a feature
of the sale being strong interstate competition for the Murray
Greys on offer.

Of the 29 Murray Grey bulls on offer, 25 were sold, to a top
