11th Annual Feeder Steer School for Armidale, February 7 - 9  (posted 20/12/05)

Arrangements are well under way for the 11th Armidale Feeder Steer School to be held at UNE on 7-9th February 2006. The program will be very similar to the highly successful schools of recent years - with top industry speakers, hands-on live assessment of cattle at various stages of feeding for various markets, and exposing participants to cutting edge research. Not to mention rubbing shoulders and having fun between sessions with some of the industry's best scientists, lot feeders and fellow producers. The optional visit to Rangers Valley Feedlot ( 24,000 high quality cattle for 'B3" Japan/Korea) is always a highlight and will be on again on 6th Feb.

The "new" CRC for Beef Genetic Technologies has recently made an emphatic commitment to this highly successful annual event, and NSW DPI is taking a greater role in its running as the CRC moves into its new 7-year contract.

The brochure and registration form are on the CRC web site www.beef.crc.org.au but don't delay, as recent schools have all been booked out.

Brochure and registration form are also available by post or by pdf copy - please ring 02 6770 1800 or e-mail me direct

Show results for Melbourne Royal are in  (posted 18/10/05)

In front of one of the largest crowds in attendance for the judging of any of the cattle breeds, 67 head of Murray Grey's were presented for judging at the 2005 Melbourne Royal, with ‘Lerwick Park Yarraman Y4’ eventually being named Supreme Murray Grey Exhibit.

Judge Charles Wallace, of Tasmania , said the line-up of cattle in the Murray Grey ring was outstanding, adding that the range of different types of cattle reflected the varying breeding objectives.

“But I can see from this line-up that the breed is in very good heart. It is going from strength to strength,” he added.

Gordon Gill, owner of Lerwick Park, couldn’t have been happier with their results from this year’s show. In addition to taking out the major award with ‘Lerwick Park Yarraman Y4’, who also stood Grand Champion Bull and Senior Champion Bull, they also were awarded the Grand Champion Cow and Senior Champion Cow sashes with “Millwood Petrina Y206”.

“I knew we were taking some bloody good cattle down this year, but you don’t expect this,” Mr. Gill said. He attributed much of the success to manager John Tyrrell – “He did a great job with the cattle.”

The show also provided an excellent opportunity for the promotion of the breed, in this it’s 100th year.

All exhibitors were housed in the original Murray Grey Shed, which was decorated with the Murray Grey curtains, as well as many banners, pictures and Cyprus trees in pots scattered around. There was also an area provided for a promotions stand, which the Bendigo Breed Promotion Group manned for two days. Artificial turf was put down, the mobile display from the Murray Grey office was set up, and a hospitality area with free tea and coffee was provided for exhibitors and spectators, which was greatly appreciated by everyone there. The promotions stand reported excellent sales and enquires over the two days.

After the judging, organisers and competitors then headed off to the Murray Grey Dinner, with Anne Burnside recommending a great restaurant that was only a tram trip away from the show ground (if you want to have a good night out start with a tram ride a great group of people and of course it must include Debbie Traver's and Glenn Oag!).

Those who attended the dinner had a magnificent 3-course meal, which was praised by everyone as the best they've had for a long time. Our judge Charles Wallace spoke about the excellent cattle he had judge during the day, and Mrs Noeleen King, RASV Beef Cattle Committee chairperson, congratulated all Murray Grey exhibitors on their excellent display of cattle and a great job on the decorating of the shed.

Gordon Gill also supplied two boxes of centenary port and this was given to people who were sitting near the lucky spot under a plate. This proved to be a very much sort after drop.

As a thank you to all exhibitors for coming to Melbourne for the feature show each was presented with a certificate and a special plate made only for the centenary show at Melbourne . We hope in years to come that it will be a collector's item.

The organisation committee would like to especially thank a number of members for helping set up the shed before the show, as well as pack everything up afterwards, including; John Reid & Brett (Watermill), Melinda Kent (Kentsie), Barry Tainton (Jimba Vale) and Geoff and Kate Buickarki. A special thank you must also go to Ian Burnside and Ken Lewis for an excellent job on judging day, as well as to everyone else who also contributed. The efforts of all of these people were very much appreciated.

The show was a great success for the Murray Grey Breed this year at Melbourne and congratulations must go to everyone who entered in the show. Being the centenary year for the Murray Grey everyone will be sure to remember this show for many years to come.

Junior Champion Heifer was Rebecca Wiltshire's "Ellavagoode Zelma", who was also named 2005 Reserve British Breed Junior Champion Heifer.

Show results for Brisbane Royal are in  (posted 18/10/05)

The celebration of 100 years of Murray Greys has seen another impressive array of cattle from the breed displayed at this year’s Brisbane Royal Show.

In the female section, David and Sally Taylor of Toowoomba were celebrating a milestone of their own – 21 years of Murray Greys – which was capped off by their being awarded Grand Champion Female with their 39-month-old, ‘Baroona Park Guinevere’.

The main winners in the bull section were David and Valerie Smith, of Maclagan, with ‘Chvalli Yumali Y28’, backing up his wins at the Pittsworth feature show earlier this year and scooping Junior Champion and Grand Champion ribbons in Toowoomba.

At just over 20 months, the bull only just made the senior category, but the Smiths knew right from the start that he had an excellent chance of winning.

“I consider him the best bull we’ve ever bred,” Mrs Smith said. “He’s tall and long and in absolute proportion. He such a presence about him and a quiet nature.”

With several calves about to hit the ground, the Smiths will also be watching to see how his progeny perform.

An embryo calf, ‘Chvalli Yumali Y28’, is the second champion bull to come from one of their stud’s champion females.

The next step for the bull will be to have semen removed from him and then sold privately.

With David and Valerie now retired, they continue with stud cattle purely for the love of it – as well as the chance to catch up with old friends at the Ekka.

“We’ve been in drought for many years and it makes it worthwhile when you win, with all the money you spend on feed and getting them to this stage,” Mrs. Smith said.

Murray Grey Heifer Supreme Trade Exhibit at Perth Royal (posted 11/10/05)

The Murray Grey breed stole the limelight at the Colin Pearce Prime Steer or Heifer on the hoof competition at this year’s Perth Royal Show, taking out a host of ribbons including the Grand Champion and Supreme Trade Exhibit of the Show.

Gary and Julie Buller, Monterey Murray Grey Stud, Karridale, were the proud exhibitors of the beautiful young Murray Grey heifer crowned number one.

Leading to the finale, the heifer outgunned 24 other entries to be named Champion in its heavyweight class and rose above a quality display of 81 trade cattle entries. She was then judged against the Grand Champion Led Steer, a Limousin- Murray Grey cross, exhibited by Murdock University , to be awarded Supreme Exhibit.

The 514kg heifer scanned 11mm fat and finished with 89 out of a possible 100 points in areas of degree of finish, muscle and fat. The daughter of sire Monterey Sundowner has been paddock reared with access to a Semini custom mix.

Fellow stud breeder, David Hill Uruga Murray Grey stud, Wannamal, was not far off the pace with 88 points to earn the Reserve Grand Champion and Champion Mediumweight.

Mr Hill added a further two broad ribbons to his name with a 451kg Murray Grey steer named the Reserve Champion Mediumweight and the Reserve Heavyweight title for a 500 kg Murray Grey steer scanning 11mm fat.

In all, Murray Greys and their crosses took out 10 of the eleven Champion and Reserve Championship placings in the “On the Hoof” Prime Steer or Heifer Competition.

Honourary Life Membership Awarded to South Australian breeder (posted 28/09/05)

After being involved with the Murray Grey breed for twenty-five years, Elaine Reynolds, from Redways Murray Grey Stud, Woodside, S.A., has been awarded an Honourary Life Membership by the Murray Grey Society.

Starting her stud in 1980, Elaine showed for many years, winning many broad ribbons, and was a member of the South Australian Breed Promotions group for twenty years. Presenting the award during judging at the 2005 Adelaide Royal Show, Judge Charles Wallace said Elaine "had dedication in her bones".

"She amalgamated the SA and South East groups and was President of the group when it featured at the Royal Adelaide Show," he said.

"She put much effort into the breed and is a tireless worker, has a great marketing ability and also promoted the Murray Grey steers."

Elaine says the biggest improvement she has seen in the beef industry in the past twenty years has been the availability of objective measurements.

"Breeders can use this important tool, but we still need to look at structure - using breeding values as tools," she said.

"The progress the beef industry has made is astonishing and I'd encourage all breeders to participate in carcase competitions and not lose sight of the fact that we are breeding for meat."

$15,000 Qld record for Murray Grey (from the Queensland Country Life - 15/09/05)

It was a dream come true for Marilyn and Shelly Hansen of the Shell-Dee Murray Grey Stud at Kingaroy after their outstanding show ring performer Shell-Dee Stirling was knocked down for a Queensland record price of $15,000 at AgShow last week.

With expectations high following Sterling's illustrious show career, which included feature championship wins at Sydney and Kingaroy and recently at Brisbane Royal, it was as much a relief as a lottery win after Adrian Walsh, Killaloo, Drillham, made the winning bid on behalf of his clients.

The successful partnership of federal president Gary Buller, Monterey Stud, Karridale, WA, and Milton Moore, Blackwood Stud, Boyanup Brook, WA, will jointly share the services of the Sydney Grand Champion.

Mr Buller first saw the 1150 kg son of Monterey Millenium - the former $28,500 Monterey sale topper - at Sydney and later at the Brisbane Ekka and was impressed by his overall balance and mobility.

"We've done our homework on Sterling's female family which just confirmed my thinking that he (Sterling) has a significant future and will complement our existing stud operation," said Mr Buller.

He said after initial duties at Blackwood, Sterling will be transferred to Monterey for their main joining program early next winter and used specifically over their younger, X-drop females to improve performance and lengthen the progeny.

Overall five Murray Grey bulls changed hands on the first day of the  AgShow sale and averaged $5,400, which represented an 83% clearance of the breed's section.

It was been an amazing week for Mr Buller's Monterey Stud which also contributed to the previous Queensland record money of $10,750, set at the Five Star Murray Grey Sale, Wandoan a few days earlier, with a youngster by Monterey Starlight that was bred and sold by Marion Randall of Broad Gully Murray Grey Stud, Wandoan.

Overall there were twenty two bulls sold at the Five Star Murray Grey Sale, for a 79% clearance. The top price was $10,750, with the average being $3,398.
