Murray Grey Steers Blitz Field of 700

At the Dalby Beef Bonanza on 2nd of November the Glengower Murray Grey Stud (Kevin and Trish Vayro) displayed purebred Murray Grey steers with the qualities required to defeat the strong 700 head competition.

Kevin Vayro said, his day started out well with a steer under 400kg taking out the blue ribbon. He then went on to win the pen (3 head) of steers over 400kgs class and that same pen eventually winning the Grand Champion Pen of Steers at the event. The Glengower steers were grain fed and snapped up by Pittworth and Chinchilla butchers for premium prices which just put gloss on the prize money the Vayros had already received on that day.

Whilst Kevin was at Dalby getting his photo taken with his steers, Trisha was busy at the Top of the Range Bull and Female sale getting equal top price bull. Not bad going for a couple of youngsters who have been in the industry for at least 70 years.

Murray Grey Bull wins Champion Interbreed Junior Bull

Lerwick Park Buckley B2 won Junior Champion Murray Grey Bull at the Melbourne Royal this year. The grey bull then went on to compete in the Interbreed section against 21 other breeds from five states and won Supreme Interbreed Junior Bull. The judge was one of the top judges in Australia; Mr David Bondfield from QLD. David described Lerwick Park Buckley B2 as the most complete Murray Grey bull he had seen. He described Buckley as very correct with plenty of width and length.

Lerwick Park Buckley is sired by Orcadia Park Century GW428 (born 1985) Sire of many Champions of the Murray Grey Breed including OP Cenette. OP Hyperno, OP Super Cool, OP Syndicate. According to the team at Lerwick Park Murray Grey Stud, his Dam OP Topaz S82 has some of the best breeding that you could find in the Murray Grey Breed.

Congratulations to Lerwick Park and all Murray Grey breeders who presented cattle at the Melbourne Royal.

Sale (Vic) Murray Grey Feature Show

Murray Greys were the feature breed at the Sale District Agricultural Society Annual Show on Saturday 3/11/07. Gippsland Murray Grey Breeders arrived in force with 32 head paraded and bringing a bonus of more than 80 ml of rain. In spite of the day long downpour the quality of the Murray Greys exhibited shone through the gloom as the following results prove.

Lerwick Park continued their winning ways with Millwood Image Z97, aged 32 months, winning;

Senior Champion Bull, Grand Champion Bull, Supreme MG Exhibit, Interbreed Senior Champion Bull, Interbreed Supreme Exhibit.

Wattlewood Knight Life B6 won the Bull 18-20 months.

Eight year old Lindsay Edith LSY U117, the oldest cow exhibited, was awarded Reserve Senior Ch Female, with her calf Gilldon Corey, 6 months, awarded 3rd in Bull under 12 months.

Wattlewood Stud also shone with Wattlewood Bees Knees B10 taking out Junior Champion Bull and Interbreed Reserve Junior Champion Bull, while Wattlewood Lady Jane X3 was;

Senior Champion Female, Grand Champion Female, Interbreed Senior Champion Female.

Ungulla Brooke took out Interbreed Reserve Junior Champion Female.

Because of the extreme conditions good photos are in short supply. The Gippsland gang all looked very smart in the beginning, wearing matching polo shirts, but after several hours of constant rain were bedraggled, uncomfortable and soggy. All in all a very successful day for our breed, and a fun day for our members.

Agshow Bull Sale - Toowoomba 05Sept07

Despite the prospect of a better season than those experienced in the past few years, bull buyers were generally very subdued across the breeds. Shelly Hanson, Marilyn Hanson and Dean Rasmussan of Kingaroy sold the only Murray Grey bull on the day. The excited bidding finalised at $6000. Their next bull was passed in at $3500. The quality of the Murray Grey sale bulls was very high. The next breed to enter the ring and confirm our suspicions of subdued buying were the Charolais with the first 7 bulls not receiving a bid. David and Sally Taylor of Baroona Park Murray Grey Stud and Chris and Trisha Anderson of Pacan Murray Grey Stud also supported this sale.

Wallawong bulls to $7500

New and return buyers competed strongly to secure their chosen lots at the 10th Annual Wallawong Production Sale, 19th July 2007. Bulls sold to $7,500 for lot 2, Wallawong Quarterback, an 18mth old son of Lindsay Starbright S117.

Wallawong co-principal, Lachlan James, rated Quarterback as one of the best Murray Grey bulls recently produced. 'Not only was he visually impressive, he had exceptional performance and scan data' Lachlan commented. 'He is a bull that can be used over cows of any breed to generate great profits' Mr James added. Quarterback's excellent performance data was accompanied by substantial physical characteristics, weighing 725kg and scanning an EMA of 114cm2. Return buyers, the Gall family, Moree purchased Quarterback to complement the two Starbright bulls they purchased in 2006.

Other sales of note included Lot 3, Wallawong Priority, a Pacan Taskmaster son for $5,000. Priority weighed in at 790kg and possessed an EMA of 117cm2. $5,000 was also paid for the heaviest bull in the catalogue, lot 12, tipping the scales at 800kg, Wallawong Pandemonium, a Willalooka Pharaoh son scanned a 108cm2 EMA and had fat scans of 10/6mm. He was purchased to be used over Greyman females to produce progeny for the domestic feedlot market.

Two bulls sold for $4,500, lot 4 and lot 5. Lot 4, Wallawong Pentagon, another impressive son of Pacan Taskmaster possessed the highest EMA, scanning 122cm2 and weighing 785kg. 'The line of Taskmaster bulls were very impressive and displayed the high quality carcass characteristics that we are breeding for' Mr James commented.

Also at $4,500 was lot 5, Wallawong Patriot, a Monterey Starlight son who impressed buyers with his length, combined with an EMA scan of 114cm2 while weighing 795kg.

In all 14 of 21bulls sold on the day to average $3821. This was complemented by the sale of 25 commercial females that sold to $800 and averaged $740. While, another 8 bulls were sold in the weeks after the sale.
