Combined
QLD BPG Meeting
On Sunday 3rd October members from the three breed promotion groups combined
for a meeting to discuss and plan events for 2005, 100 years of Murray
Greys.
In 2005 a number of Murray Grey Feature Shows are proposed. In February,
Tenterfield Show, on the 8th March Pittsworth Show followed by the Kingaroy
Show. Each breed promotion group looking after the show in their area.
In 2005, in honour of the celebrations all royal shows in each state will
promote or be a Murray Grey Feature Show. It is proposed that a small
sub-committee comprising of one person from each group to be involved.
All present endorsed the concept that Sally Taylor, Marion Randall and
Shelly Hansen be on this panel to date.
Appropriate apparel for all Feature and Royal shows for 2005 was discussed
with all present agreeing that this should comprise of the appropriate
foot wear, dark blue jeans, blue chambray shirt and the proposed recommended
green vests with a logo.
Other proposed functions to promote the Murray grey Breed in 2005 are:
The Ag Show and Farmfest were nominated as likely centres. At the Ag Show
a B.B.Q using Murray Grey beef was suggested by the Burnett Group.
Also a number of feedlots were suggested such as Dalby, Warwick, Murgon,
and Yarraman where good quality groups of Murray Grey steers from different
studs could promote the breed.
Each group are to investigate the current restrictions for holding such
functions and any other proposed event such as holding a field day. Each
proposal should be forwarded onto David Taylor. Advertising of any definite
event could be put in the Murray Grey Annual distributed before Christmas,
however the deadline is the 29th October 2004.
Holding another youth camp in 2005, this time in Kingaroy, was discussed.
Shelly Hansen together with assistance from Laura Durkin and overseered
by the South Burnett Group will organise this event and notify everyone
of the date and venue. The general feeling by those present was that holding
a Murray Grey Sale in 2005 was a good idea. The exact date and place as
yet undecided. Dalby, Roma and Oakey and possibly Farmfest time are under
consideration. David Taylor will investigate the viability of having a
multi-agent sale and contact principal agents and also investigate further
when the most appropriate time would be to hold such a sale. As to selling
female stock at present vendors were encouraged to make use of QLD Murray
Greys Newsletter as a possible marketing tool.
The board has found it is no longer economically viable to be able to
allocate annual funding to each MGB promotion group, however in 2005 there
will be funds for any centenary functions. There is now a Murray Grey
breed promotion group website but to date only Tasmania and South Australia
are making use of this. Steve Dummett with approval from those present
at the meeting will co-ordinate QLDs website with the inclusion
initially of QLD newsletter. David Taylor presented recent board meeting
decisions. Full details later in this newsletter.
Peter Parnell and the N.S.W. Ag College are doing research into type,
colour, coat influence of individual sires and so on. Short coated Murray
Greys are desireable. Application for more research sponsorship is being
sought.
Mel Binnington proposed that the RNA Meeting Centre be used in 2005 to
promote the MG Beef cattle.
Future meetings combining the three breed promotion groups in Queensland
should be held 6 monthly. This decision was strongly decided by all present.

Murray
Grey Youth Camp - Pittsworth 2004
On the 16th, 17th, and 18th July a herd of enthusiastic
young cattlemen and women aged between 6 and 20, along with a few parents
and helpers, set up camp at the Pittsworth Showgrounds for the 2004 Queensland
Murray Grey Youth Camp.
The muster was aimed at teaching participants about the preparation and
showing of stud beef cattle. For many of them, this was the first time
they had experienced mucking out stalls, washing, grooming, judging and
handling.
Lectures covered topics such as structure, animal husbandry and reproduction.
Guest speaker John Bertram from the Goondiwindi DPI spoke on the Bull
Fertility and Herd Health while David Taylor and Pat Bohan covered the
finer points of meat. A stock show and handlers competition was
held on the Sunday which gave participants a chance to put their newly
acquired skills to test and the results were very impressive indeed. However,
it was not a case of all work and no play. There were plenty of laughs
to be had during the Barnyard Olympics. The fundraising Auction held on
Saturday night also provided great entertainment as participants tried
their hand at being auctioneers. And although the halter making generally
ended in a tangled mess of rope, some people did actually manage to take
home a fully functional halter.

Thanks must go to all those involved in helping the Muster
run smoothly and also to Baroona Park, Darrowby, Kiah Park, Misty View,
Broad Gully and Boomerang Park Studs who loaned over 30 head of cattle
to participants for the weekend.
Bigger and better things are hoped for next years Muster in celebration
of the 100 year anniversary of this great breed.

Reports
AGSHOW
Eight good quality bulls were presented to a large gathering of buyers.
Whilst most buyers were not prepared to bid on the day, the editor noted
many following the bidding closely and annotating their catalogues for
later purchases.
Only the one bull was sold during the sale (Madonna Downs Larriken - David
and Val Smith), going to Clifton for $3250. Lot 144 Shell-Dee Legend was
passed in for $4100 and Lot 147 Chvalli Xplorer X6 was passed in for $4000.
All three vendors advised that sales were made on that day as a result
of their attendance at the Toowoomba Ag Show.
Wheelview Sale
 |
A strong turnout (100 buyers) at the Wheelview sale
in Tenterfield with buyers investing in Quality Murray Grey bulls,
stud and commercial females. 24 bulls were sold totaling $62000 with
an average price of $2583. One Queensland breeder paying top price
of $5000 for the feature bull "Wheelview Yosef Y9" (Lot
7 on the day - Lot 24 in the catalogue). Semen lots raised $830 with
the prices surprisingly low.
Stud Females took $9900, averaging $990. Top price female "Wheelview
Sheen Y34" staying south of the border and making her home in
Inverell for $2000. Three led heifers made their way to Queensland
just in time for the Murray Grey Youth Camp.
57 Commercial Females, with the majority PTIC, selling for $38935,
averaged at $680. It was great to see so many Queenslanders at the
sale, which made for a good opportunity to swap ideas and socialise. |
Wandoan
|
There was a 75% clearance of bulls at the seventh Wandoan Five
Star Bull Sale, with 21 bulls selling at an average of $2738, and
reaching a top price of $4000 three times.
Ed and Marion Randall, 'Broad Gully', Wandoan sold Broad Gully Starlight
and Broad Gully Band Wagon at this figure, and David and Sally Taylor,
'Baroona Park', Toowoomba received $4000 for Baroona Park Merlin.
Starlight and Band Wagon were both sired by Monterey bulls, while
Merlin was by Baroona Park Lexington.
The overall clearance and good average made this one of the more
successful of the Five Star sales, with vendors being satisfied
with the outcome.
Purchasers properties are located over a wide area of Queensland,
with bulls going to Augathella, Marlborough, Jackson, Miles, Chinchilla,
Durong and Biloela.

Stud
in the Spotlight - The Ultimate Murray Greys
The stud was established in 1992 with the purchase of foundation
females from Boomerang Park, Wheelview and Fuseland.
The Ultimates top performing female lines are the Winifreds, Cleopatras
and Lindas. These lines are still making an outstanding impact on
the herd today.
Home bred sires being used at the moment include The Ultimate Lucas, Marshall,
and Justice.
They have undertaken genestar tests on the studs top female lines with
impressive results, several of them possessing five stars. E.T and A.I
programs are being used increasingly in the herd to improve genetics.
They run 40 stud breeders and 80 commercial on the property at Condamine.
Showing cattle has not been a priority although they have had success
in the few shows attended. Visit Tim and Pauline Perkins new web site
at: www.theultimatemurraygreys.com.au or give them a call to discuss your
next purchase on 07-4627711.

Murray
Greys in Wales
"A breed of cattle that was much talked about in the
mid seventies was the Murray Grey, a stabilized cross between the Beef
Shorthorn and the Aberdeen Angus and were greatly favoured by the Australian
farmer. Paul has found the Murray Grey cow to be the ideal dam for the
suckled calf because she is compact yet capable of giving birth to Continental
breeds, of which Paul favours the Charolais, and produces sufficient milk
to enable the calf to grow well. The herd by now consists of some 36 cows
and 9 heifers, calving in April to a Charolais bull. They are housed in
loose yards from the beginning of November through until May during which
time they are fed exclusively on silage. Because of the high prices paid
for store cattle this year it was decided to sell cattle at 15 months
as stores with some finished through Dovecote Park Ltd to Waitrose."

Murray
Greys Blitz Melbourne
Murray Greys blitzed the opposition in last weeks Royal Melbourne
Beef Carcase Competition in what was undoubtedly the most convincing domination
of these awards in the events history.
After winning Grand Champion Steer on the Hoof, the Murray Greys then
scooped the carcase awards, winning the coveted Borthwick trophy along
with Grand Champion Carcase, Champion Schools Carcase, equal Reserve Champion
Lightweight Carcase, Champion and Reserve Champion Middle Weight Carcase,
Res Champion Heavy Weight carcase, equal Highest Scoring Schools Carcase
Lightweight and Highest Scoring Schools Carcase- Heavyweight.
The remarkable performance by the Murray Grey breed in this competition
needs to be properly analysed to be appreciated. Providing 13 purebred
entries in a field of 159 steers, Murray Greys had 8% of the entries yet
took out 66% of the Broad Ribbons awarded in the Beef Carcase Competition.
In addition this was the14th time Murray Greys have won the prestigeous
Borthwich Trophy, since first competing in 1971, almost double the number
of times of its nearest rival.
Two of the three steers forming the Borthwick team, came from Margaret
Bohms Kelkette Murray Grey Stud, and were prepared by Billabong
High School. One of these went on to win Grand Champion Carcase with a
score of 95.5 points. The third steer, was owned by The Glen Murray Greys.
Murray Grey Society President, Gary Buller said, Beef Carcase competitions
such as these provide well documented, independent assessment of the commercial
traits beef producers are seeking to develop within their herds. It is
refreshing to see actual carcase quality being measured, rather
then the estimates which so often do not deliver the goods.
In an industry where meat quality is becoming increasingly important,
the Murray Grey Breed offers producers unique genetics that provide the
ideal muscling required by the industry along with adequate fat cover
to meet all market specifications. Extensive Genestar testing by Murray
Grey breeders has also identified Murray Greys as having four times the
incidence of the Tenderness 2 gene in animals tested, than any other breed.
The Murray Grey is unrivalled as a domestic supermarket carcase with the
versatility to also meet the B3 long fed specs.
Further cementing the MG breeds reputation as the Carcase
Kings in the Australian Beef Industry, Murray Grey genetics have
met with other recent major success both here and overseas. In Perth last
year, the Greys won Grand Champion Steer on the Hoof and Grand Champion
Carcase, followed by the 2004 Adelaide Royal, where they won Domestic
Supermarket Champion Carcase and Grand Champion Carcase. Further afield,
A Murray Grey won the 2004 Champion Carcase at this years Calgary
Stampede in Canada, making it the breeds third win in four years,
with the Res Champion in the fourth year. A remarkable feat by an Australian
breed against the best genetics assembled in North America.

News
from the MGBCS Board
Much of the time at the July and September Board
meetings has been spent on the very important issue of the Society Herdbook
Registers. Some significant decisions were made on this complex issue
and members should by now have received a statement from the President
on the changes to be implemented. If members have concerns or queries
on these changes they should contact me or Gary Buller.
All members should be planning on being involved in the exciting Murray
Grey breed Centenary celebrations next year. There are numerous events
to be held, both locally and nationally, that will provide a great opportunity
to get together and celebrate, as well as promote the breed and strengthen
our position in the beef industry. The most outstanding event will be
the International Congress to be held in Western Australia in October
and it would be great if we could organise a party of Queensland members
to attend. Most of the capital city Royal Shows (including Brisbane) will
have Murray Greys as the Feature Breed next year and plans are underway
for a bigger and better showing of Greys at Brisbane RNA. There will also
be Murray Grey Feature Shows at Tenterfield, Pittsworth and Kingaroy,
so there will be plenty of opportunities to show off our cattle. The Society
will be publishing a Grey Country Annual in December this year and I would
encourage all members to contribute some editorial material and place
an advertisement in this issue which will be current for the whole of
the centenary year.
Hoping for greatly improved seasonal conditions so that we can really
celebrate our centenary.
Your Queensland representative on the Board.
