Greys shine through sea of pink

Through a sea of pink, the Murray Grey breed put on what has been described by those ringside as ‘one of the best feature breed displays at Canberra’.

As part of the feature show celebrations Murray Grey exhibitors were supporting the McGrath Foundation and all handlers were donned in pink polo shirts for the judging.

Assisted by his associate, Bryce Tresiddler, Judge Graham Day, from South Australia commented on how impressed he was with the overall quality of cattle on display and that he was honoured to be asked to judge this feature show that had studs represented from NSW, ACT, VIC and SA.

Starting with the females, Champion Heifer calf was awarded to Onward Cassie F5, a 12 month old heifer exhibited by Onward Murray Greys, Dorrigo NSW. Mr Day chose this female as is Calf Champion because she is ‘beautifully structured, exact on her legs and has a lovely long body’. Reserve heifer calf champion went to Kentsie Florence, a ten month old heifer exhibited by the Siekman & Kent Partnership, Labertouch VIC, chosen because of her similarity to the Champion.

The Junior female section was dominated by the Watermill Pastoral Co., Red Hill VIC, taking out Junior Champion Female with Watermill Beatrice E47 and Reserve Junior Champion Female with Watermill Daisy E10. Watermill Beatrice E47 overcame her stable mate because Mr Day saw her as, ‘A magnificent heifer from every angle, she is beautifully made with adequate size and the right length’.

Watermill continued their winning ways with Watermill Heiress C8, a four year old cow with calf at foot being awarded the Senior Champion Female due to her ‘Soundness, productivity and scale’. The Reserve Senior Champion Female went to Elizabethfields Gemma B2.

In a move that we do not see happen regularly, Judge Graham Day chose the Junior Champion Female, Watermill Beatrice E47 as the Grand Champion Murray Grey Female. His reasons for doing so were that he believed she was ‘An absolutely outstanding animal with so much to offer and should go on to prove a great breeder’.

Bull judging provided another great spectacle for onlookers, with a 22 month old bull, Yamba Elapse E32, exhibited by the Yamba Murray Grey Stud, Rosebery NSW taking home the big prize of Grand Champion Bull. This 840kg bull impressed Mr Day because ‘he is beautifully made, he is very correct and carries himself exceptionally well’.

After winning Senior Champion bull, Yamba Elapse E32 found himself up against some strong competition for the Grand Champion prize after first overcoming the Reserve Senior Champion Bull, Watermill Drifter D44.

Champion Bull Calf went to Devanah Fellini F32 and 11 and half month old bull weighing 510kg and exhibited by N.J & J.M Southorn, Forbes NSW. Mr Day liked this young calf because he is ‘beautifully balanced, has a lot of frame and is well muscled through the hindquarters’. Reserve Champion Bull calf went to Yamba Yorkshire F17 a 12 month old bull weighing in at 500kg.

Junior bulls saw another ‘Yamba Exhibit’ in the winner’s circle with Yamba Exhibit E85, a 735kg bull being crowned Junior Champion bull because of his ‘sirey outlook, strong top line and ability to track well’. Reserve Junior Champion bull went to Watermill Easy Rider.

The final class of the day pitted Grand Champion Female and Grand Champion Bull against each other and after much deliberation, Watermill Beatrice E47 prevailed and was crowned the Supreme Champion of the Murray Grey breed.
