National Show and Sale reaches $9,000

Following a favourable season and increased prices in the saleyards, the 2011 National Show and Sale saw a boost in average prices and the clearance of lots offered for sale. Twenty one bulls were sold to an average of $4,190, with an 81% clearance. Thirty females sold to an average of $3,400, with a 91% clearance.

A 1038kg bull offered by Geoff and Kate Buick of the Arki Murray Grey Stud, Bordertown SA fetched the top price of $9,000 at the 2011 Murray Grey National Show and Sale.

The bull, Arki E.T boasted a raw eye muscle area of 134sq cm and had a rump fat depth of 11mm and rib fat of 10mm. Sired by Orcadia Park Cenette, Arki E.T was earlier named Senior Champion and Grand Champion Bull and Supreme Exhibit of the Show, by Judge Stephen Branson and Associate Jake Phillips. The Supreme Exhibit was chosen because, ‘he is a powerful, high quality bull, with tremendous performance and is an excellent quality package that is so accurate in handling himself’.

Dean Rasmussen and Marilyn Hansen, of Shell-Dee Murray Greys, Kingaroy, QLD, made the trip down to Wodonga to pay the top price of $9,000 for Arki ET.

The second top price of the sale, $6,500 was received for Kentsie Shaker, a twenty month old bull by Watermill Abraham. Offered by Melinda Kent, Kentsie Murray Greys Labertouche VIC and purchased by Anthony and Denise Fabris, Beeamma Murray Greys Bordertown SA.

Reserve Senior Champion Bull, Onward Trooper, offered by Sue Francis, Onward Murray Grey Stud, Dorrigo NSW made a solid $5,000 and was purchased by John Kennedy, Pittong VIC.

Selected by judges for his ‘combination of softness, power and growth’, the Junior Champion Bull, Watermill Easyrider E54 made $3,000 for vendor, Watermill Pastoral Co., Red Hill VIC and was purchased by R.H Kendall and Son, Courabyra NSW.

Reserve Junior Champion Bull, Lindsay Expresso will make his new home at Sunbury, VIC after being purchased for $4,500 by Ian and Anne Burnside of Cratloe Murray Greys.

For the second year in a row, Nigel and Gina Eylward, Eylwarra Sands Murray Greys, Lucindale SA, exhibited the Champion Unled Bull, Eylwarra Sands Exhibit, a two year old bull by Woodbourn Warrior A69. The Champion Unled bull was described by the judges as ‘a bull with outstanding muscularity, a powerful bull, but still sound and accurate in his movement. He has tremendous presentation and plenty of bone and substance, he is an overall exceptional bull’. Qualities that were noticed by John Kennedy, Pittong VIC who purchased him for $5,500, the top price for unled bulls.

Reserve Champion Unled bull, Onward Striker was purchased by DE & AI Ratcliffe, Urana NSW for $3,000.

Murray Grey Females put on another solid performance to see a 91% clearance, to a top of $6,000.

Senior Champion Female, Glenliam Farm Valsari A22, offered by the Williams River Cattle Co., Glen William NSW, reached the top price of $6,000. The six year old cow, by The Glen Marshall V172 with heifer calf at foot, was purchased by BW & JR Gorton, who started the Robin’s Nest Murray Grey Stud in early 2010 near Glenore Grove QLD.

A substitute entry from the Waroona Murray Grey Stud, Molong NSW, Waroona Opera Star C18 with bull calf at foot, won Reserve Senior Champion Female. The cow was purchased for $3,250 by volume buyers, the Bensley Family of Stillbrook Murray Greys NSW.

In what is fast becoming a trend in the Murray Grey show ring, the Junior Champion Heifer was crowned the Grand Champion Female. Glen Liam Farm Antoinette E78, a twenty one month old heifer, from the same stable as the top price female, Williams River Cattle Co., was described by the judges as an ‘outstanding heifer, she has top capacity and exhibits muscularity while retaining her femininity’.

The heifer was purchased by Breelong Farms, Woodenbong NSW for $4,000.

Reserve Junior Champion Female, Watermill Ellinda F13, from Watermill Pastoral Co., Red Hill VIC sold for $2,000 to Wagga Murray Greys, Wagga Wagga NSW.

$5,000 was paid four times for the top price Unled Females.

For the third year in a row, Michael Gadd from The Glen Murray Grey Stud, Walwa VIC sold the top price unled female. Though in 2011 he did this with two of his offerings. Reserve Champion Unled Female, The Glen Alice B284 with heifer calf at foot was purchased by the Stillbrook Murray Grey Stud Crookwell NSW.

Stillbrook also purchased stablemate, The Glen Alice A286 for $5,000.

Rod Fawns from the Saber Murray Grey Stud, Deniliquin NSW, sold a $5,000 unled female, with Pip Burnett from Coringa Estates, Stirling SA, purchasing Saber Doris Z34 with heifer calf at foot.

Champion Unled Female, Mt View Cristy D431 with bull calf at foot also reached the top price of $5,000 for unled females and was purchased by the Yamba Murray Grey Stud Narrandera, NSW.

A semen package of twenty five straws from silver sire Cudgegong Park Bass B17 from Upper Murray stud, The Glen, sold for $5000 to Rogialyn Murray Greys and a second for $4975.

Volume buyers, included the Bensley Family, Stillbrook Murray Greys, purchasing six cow and calf units for an average of $4,290. Bunker Farm Murray Greys, Drouin VIC purchased three heifers for an average of $2,750 and a bull for $3,000. The OSO Murray Grey Stud, Table Top NSW, purchased three heifers at $2,000 each and a bull for $3,000.

Overall the sale cleared 86%, returned a gross of $200,775 with a total average of $3,725.

The selling agents were Atkins Marketing Livestock, Elders and Landmark.
