Murray Grey Cross Heifer Takes Out Grand Champion Carcase at Callide Dawson

Murray Grey genetics were once again in the spotlight at the 37th Callide Dawson Beef Carcase Competition, with Girlie Goody of Malakoff, Monto claiming the prestigious Grand Champion Carcase title.

Her winning entry — a Murray Grey cross heifer, sired by a Limousin bull and out of a Murray Grey dam — stood out in a highly competitive field of 45 entries in Class 10: Single Grain-Fed Trade Heifer (0–2 tooth, 200–320kg dressed).

The heifer recorded:

  • Hot standard carcase weight: 289.6kg

  • Eye muscle area: 122cm² (highest in the class)

  • P8 fat: 14mm | Rib fat: 8mm

Alongside the Grand Champion title, the heifer also secured:

  • 🥇 Champion Grain-Fed Trade Heifer

  • 🥉 3rd – Pen of Three Grain-Fed Steers

  • 🥉 3rd – Single Grain-Fed Steer

  • 🏅 4th – Heather Stewart Memorial Award

Ms Goody, a well-known name in Queensland’s carcase competition circles, has been quietly building a legacy based on practical experience, instinct, and a long-standing passion for cattle — values passed down from her father, Hector Goody, who also had success in national and international carcase competitions.

“It’s not about how they look — it’s how they hang up,” she said.

Running a herd of approximately 150 breeders — including Murray Greys and Limousins — Ms Goody continues to back the performance of Murray Greys for their carcase merit, market suitability, and overall consistency.

“I’ve always loved my cattle… and I’ll keep entering until I die, or lose my marbles.”

With several entries already lined up for the upcoming Gympie Carcass Classic, Ms Goody shows no signs of slowing down.
